Typalock and Dalhousie are bringing focus spaces to the SUB
Typalock and Dalhousie are working together to bring focus spaces to the Dalhousie Student Union Building for the 2026–2027 school year. It is the first public home for our tap-to-focus system, and the start of an initiative to make focus easier to find on campus.
Focus spaces around the SUB
We are putting Typalock focus tags into study areas across the Dalhousie Student Union Building in Halifax. A tag turns a table, a room, or a quiet corner into a focus space. Open Typalock, hold your phone to the tag, and the apps that usually pull you away are locked. Tap out when you’re done and your phone is yours again. No willpower required in between.
How it works

Find a tag. Look for Typalock focus tags in the SUB’s study areas as we roll them out.

Tap in. Open Typalock and hold your phone to the tag to start a focus session. Your distracting apps lock right away.

Tap out. Done studying? Tap the tag again and everything unlocks. The lock only lives while you’re in the space.
You’ll need the Typalock app, and it is out now. Download Typalock on the App Store for iPhone, then tap in at your first tag.
A student-led venture
Typalock is a student-led venture, based right here in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Starting in the SUB is deliberate. It is where students already study between classes, meet project groups, and hunt for a quiet seat during exams. That puts Typalock in front of exactly the people it was designed for: students trying to get real work done in a world engineered to interrupt them. We study here too. We built the thing we needed.
Focus is also easier when the people around you are focused. Tag by tag, the goal is simple: make the SUB a place where your phone works for you, not against you.
